I miss this version of Castiel too, so it felt good to write it - that's why fic writing and reading is so cathartic lol! And yes, that was the point I wanted to make, that you can't understand Sam and Dean's codependence and the intensity of their bond unless you've lived the kind of fucked up life they have, which this narrator actually has.
